Regine Penid, our Digital Artist, is our go-to for bringing surreal, offbeat ideas to life, creating pieces that are as unique as she is.
Regine’s journey began as an aspiring fashion designer and traditional artist. Her love for creativity led her to explore the vast world of digital mediums and she joined us almost 2yrs ago. Even when stressful deadlines loom, she quietly goes about her day, delivering beautiful artwork for projects including The Dubai Mall, Palace Dubai Creek and At.mosphere.
Q: What inspired you to become a digital artist? Was it a love for fashion, video games, or something else?
A: Before I learned digital art, I was an aspiring fashion designer and a traditional artist. Creating has always been one of my greatest strengths, a space where I felt I truly excelled. Through art, I realized how vast the world is and how limitless my potential could be. It wasn't just about pencil and paper or designing cute little dresses; there was so much more to explore. Each day, I found myself drawn to different forms of art, from traditional to digital, from performing to visual arts. And that's what led me to where I am today.
Q: What’s your favorite tool or software to use when you’re creating?
A: Adobe Photoshop, because it's easy to use, all I need is there. Simple as that. I do use Adobe illustrator but not as often as Photoshop. Oh, and After effects whenever I want to do some animations using my artwork.
Q: What’s the most fun project you’ve ever worked on at drawdeck?
A: Working on The Palace was fun, mainly because of the theme. Some of the artwork had this surreal vibe that I’m really into. It wasn’t an easy project, especially when it came to creating large-scale pieces, but with the team's help, we pulled it off, and I’m proud of what we accomplished. Plus, I picked up a few new tricks along the way—it was definitely a "create and learn" experience.
The Dubai Mall project was just as fun. With so many different types of artwork needed, I got to experiment with a variety of styles. I especially enjoyed the weird looking, offbeat pieces—I like weird stuff, it's fun to do and it keeps things interesting and never boring.
Q: What achievements or moments have brought you the most satisfaction in your role?
A: Seeing the finished artwork framed, displayed and being appreciated by the others gives me a lot of satisfaction and encourages me to create more.
Q: How do you stay creative when you're feeling stuck? Any go-to activities or routines?
A: Should I be honest with this? Lol
This might sound dark but I tend to isolate myself and listen to melancholic music while I play PC games, read webtoons, or doodle random sketches. It helps me deal with my reality and turn those feelings into creativity. That’s where a lot of my original artwork ideas come from.
Q: What’s a common misconception people have about digital art?
A: When people say, "It's easy," I get it—there’s AI, undo and redo buttons, and all that. But just because we have these tools doesn’t mean everything is a walk in the park.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received about being an artist?
A: Never weigh your worth against another’s; you are unique in your own way, and so are they. Your path is your own, and it holds a significance that only you can fulfill.
