Changing Times: New Gallery Features Set to Become Regular Fixtures
Changing Times: New Gallery Features Set to Become Regular Fixtures
When you picture an art gallery, what do you imagine?

For most of us, the image conjured up will be of cold, silent rooms with walls lined with works, or maybe sculptures in the centre. There are undoubtedly cordons and barriers in the picture, too, marking out the areas from which each subject may be viewed.
This stereotypical image has found itself challenged in recent years by artists and audiences alike, as the digital age and its influence on the rest of the world eventually worked its way into art galleries and exhibitions, too.

Apps
Nowadays, there is an app for everything and that includes art and galleries. Many galleries now have their own apps to connect with their audience. This gives galleries the chance to highlight any special events they have coming up whilst offering a taste of what they contain through pictures and videos.
The apps can also enhance the experience of the exhibition on the day, helping audiences discover all that is available and tailor their experience to their taste.
Installations
An installation is usually more permanent than an exhibition, as many of them are constructed around and in among their surroundings, but digital technology is taking effect here, too, with digital installations being seen around the world and in varying forms.
A digital installation may still rely upon its surroundings to a degree, but the digital nature means that replicating it in different locations could be viable, allowing the art to travel to the audience.
Attitude
Far from the silent, clasp-handed observers from the first paragraph, interaction with exhibits is a lot more widely accepted now and is even encouraged where it is possible. The rules about photography are only enforced where it is strictly necessary and many exhibits are now made to be interacted with, giving audiences something more all-consuming to consider and artists many more facets to wrestle with when creating their pieces.

Forced Change
This year's pandemic will also be sure to leave its mark on the industry's history. With lockdowns and restrictions affecting galleries, exhibitions, and artists around the world, new ways must be found to share the treasure that galleries hold whilst still keeping people safe. At a moment when collective experiences were undergoing their own digital revolution, the pandemic has, for now at least, curbed them.
Hopefully our new normal along with our digital capabilities will bring us new ways to enjoy things together. <em><a href="https://www.drawdeck.com/catalog/art-prints" target="_blank">Fancy adding some new art prints to your living space?
